ANALYZE YOUR GUT BACTERIA TO SCREEN FOR COLON CANCER

Check out the website on a new noninvasive technique for colon cancer screening called LifeKit Prevent Colorectal Neoplasia Test (Prescient Metabiomics). The FDA recently granted Breakthrough device status, which allows the company to receive additional agency input as it finalizes test development as well as expedites the review process.

Prescient Medicine: LifeKit Prevent

The website highlights the following facts:

  • Colorectal cancer is the #2 cause of cancer deaths.
  • 56,702 lives will be lost to colorectal cancer this year.
  • 47% of patients eligible for colon cancer screening FAIL TO DO SO.
  • 60% of patients have advanced (stage 3 or 4) cancer at the time of diagnosis.

“That’s why we’ve developed LifeKit® Prevent, the first and only highly accurate test that detects cancer and precancerous adenomas. When used as part of a colon cancer screening program, LifeKit Prevent identifies those who need a colonoscopy to evaluate the presence of colon cancer or polyps for removal by polypectomy. Remove the polyps and prevent cancer before it starts.”

With an easy-to-use swab collection kit that requires no stool contact, the test “analyzes microbiome disruption/dysbiosis providing the earliest warning signs of polyps and carcinogenesis; other screening tests primarily identify patients with cancer.”

I am a massive fan of ANY accurate form of testing that can increase the number of people that undergo appropriate colon cancer screening. Adding another tool to the armamentarium is excellent news and I look forward to additional information from the company regarding specifics of test accuracy and coverage by insurance companies. I wonder if the future might hold a combination of techniques like LifeKit (that examines the gut microbiome for RNA and DNA changes) and Cologuard (a stool test that is designed to detect the DNA and hemoglobin released from these abnormal cells of precancerous and cancerous colon lesions) to screen the most accurately for people who really need colonoscopies and polyp removals?

We can help determine if you are in need of a colonoscopy (age over 45!) and what screening options are available. If colonoscopy is the best choice for you, know that at Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Health we try and reduce as many barriers as possible to make having a colonoscopy an easy and efficient process. Numerous preparation options, breakfast the day before the test, early morning and Saturday hours, and a deluxe brand-new endoscopy suite all help to ensure a pleasant but thorough examination of the highest quality standards.
