Gastroenterologist
Dr. Gene Chiao received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley before attending Washington University School of Medicine for medical school. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center before moving to Chicago for his gastroenterology fellowship at Northwestern University. Dr. Chiao was on faculty at Indiana University School of Medicine for several years before returning to the Chicago northern suburbs where he has been caring for patients for the last 22 years.
Dr. Chiao believes strongly in an integrated approach to patient care. To better understand a patient’s condition, his goal is to understand the entire person. It starts with listening. Symptoms do not occur in a vacuum; patients lead busy, complicated personal, professional, and emotional lives, and Dr. Chiao feels it is important to appreciate gastrointestinal issues in this context. Only then is he able to synthesize an effective plan of care.
Dr. Chiao recognizes the importance of the mind-gut connection in GI health. The relationship between the brain and the GI tract is powerful, and Dr. Chiao is an expert at implementing both behavioral and medication-based approaches to harness that interdependence and help patients achieve a greater sense of GI well-being.
Dr. Chiao lives in Winnetka with his wife, surrounding by his many pets. When he is not visiting his two grown children on the East coast or his lake home in the Canadian woods, he enjoys playing tennis, camping, and woodworking.
