GASTROENTEROLOGY NERD ALERT: Food as Medicine
Hippocrates said it first, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Check out this article from TIME Magazine explaining the power of food as medicine:
“Food is becoming a particular focus of doctors, hospitals, insurers and even employers who are frustrated by the slow progress of drug treatments in reducing food-related diseases like Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and even cancer.”
The problem is that eating healthy isn’t as easy at popping a pill and, for some, these healthy foods aren’t available and/or affordable. Progressive organizations such as Geisinger Health System, Cleveland Clinic and Kaiser Permanente are providing “prescriptions” for patients to go to sponsored farmer’s markets to obtain healthy foods and are giving out recipes instead of (or along with) prescriptions. Congress is even getting on board. Last year they assigned a first ever bipartisan Food Is Medicine working group to explore how government-sponsored food programs could address hunger and also lower burgeoning health care costs. What’s more impressive is that the science is backing up these initiatives. The Diabetes Prevention Program, Dr. Dean Ornishe’s work, and studies of the Mediterranean diet have all demonstrated improved health outcomes!
