SINUSITIS LINKED TO LATER IBD
Check out this article in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy News about a study from the University of Chicago that demonstrates an increased risk of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis related to sinusitis earlier in life.
Gastroenterology and Endoscopy News: Sinusitis Linked to Later IBD, Study Finds
“Victoria Rai, the lab manager of the Rubin Lab at UChicago Medicine, and first author of the study, said interacting with many patients who had both sinusitis and IBD led the researchers to examine the association between the two. The Rubin Lab is “working on more research to further investigate this relationship, with plans for a potential prospective study in the future. We need to look more into the relationship between sinusitis and IBD to get a clearer understanding of their association. Multicenter and prospective studies should be done to assess this relationship. Based on the results, this might impact future guidelines on who and when to screen for IBD.”
“Dr. Lukin, who was not involved in the research, noted that the use of antibiotics for sinusitis might be a trigger for IBD. “I would like to see further research on this topic,” he said. “Few predictive risk factors for subsequent IBD development have been identified, and the link between IBD following sinusitis is therefore of significant clinical importance as a potential marker of patients at risk for subsequent IBD. I would like to understand the impact of antibiotic use on IBD development, the chronicity of sinus infections, and to see a multivariable comparison of the significant variables. While this was a very large single-center database, a large national database may help to further study this area.”
