8 Common Signs of Vitamin Deficiencies

by Devon Marcin, RN

Our body requires 6 essential nutrients daily to function optimally. These include water, carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. Specifically, vitamins and minerals are nutrients only needed in small amounts but are often the reason for common health ailments. Evaluating your nutritional diet can help you feel better and eliminate these health problems associated with malnutrition. There are signs that your body may be lacking vitamins and minerals. The article presents 8 common signs of vitamin and mineral deficiencies and what foods and supplements to incorporate into your diet to address these deficiencies.

These common signs may include:
  1. Brittle hair and nails which could indicate a biotin deficiency.
  2. Mouth ulcers or cracks in the corners of the mouth which could indicate iron or vitamin B deficiency.
  3. Bleeding gums which could indicate lack of vitamin C.
  4. Poor night vision and white growths on eyes which could indicate vitamin A deficiency.
  5. Scaly patches and dandruff which could indicate zinc or vitamin B deficiencies.
  6. Hair loss which could indicate lack of iron and/or certain B vitamins and zinc.
