Jeffrey Nathanson, M.D.

Gastroenterologist

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Dr. Jeffrey Nathanson graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College with a major in history. He earned his doctor of medicine (M.D.) degree from Stanford University School of Medicine where he received a Medical Scholars research award. After completing his internal medicine residency at the University of Chicago, Dr. Nathanson spent an additional year on faculty as chief resident before pursuing his fellowship in gastroenterology at the same institution. Since 2006, Dr. Nathanson has developed a large clinical practice caring for patients on the North Shore. In addition, he currently holds the position of Senior Clinical Educator at the University of Chicago.

PHILOSOPHY

Dr. Nathanson believes the patient-physician partnership is the foundation of empathic and effective care. Patients are much more than just a collection of symptoms; they are individuals who bring their own experiences and insights to the care interaction. Trust is at the core of that relationship.

Dr. Nathanson puts great emphasis on wellness in his practice. Whether it be through examining quality of life measures in patients who struggle with irritable bowel syndrome or through preventative cancer screenings, Dr. Nathanson looks at the whole person, not just the GI tract. He appreciates that it is a synthesis of diet, fitness, genetics, and the brain-gut connection that contributes to our gastrointestinal well-being and overall health.

Dr. Nathanson recognizes that the field of gastroenterology is continually evolving and prides himself on integrating the latest GI clinical research into his practice. He sees it as his responsibility to tailor these scientific advances to the individual in a manner that is understandable and supportive of the patient’s goals.

PERSONAL LIFE

Dr. Nathanson lives in Highland Park with his wife and two teenage children. He loves being outside in nature year-round, whether it be downhill skiing, playing paddle tennis, trail running, or walking his two dogs with his family. Travel and seeing live music are among his passions, and autumn Sundays you’ll find him at Soldier Field or glued to the television cheering for the Bears.
