Gastroenterologist
Dr. Phillip Chung grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago. He graduated cum laude with a major in biology from Carleton College, where he also played running back on the football team. Dr. Chung received his medical doctorate (M.D.) degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine and was awarded American Cancer Society and National Institutes of Health awards for research in cancer biology. He then completed his internship and
residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Chung returned to the University of Chicago to complete his fellowship in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. During his GI training, he published multiple articles in scientific journals and wrote several textbook chapters. He was also given an award for “Best Clinical Fellow” by the house staff, reflecting his career-long love of teaching. Dr. Chung has been practicing gastroenterology in the Chicagoland area and Southeastern Wisconsin since 2003.
Dr. Chung firmly believes that the first tenet of caring for a patient is caring for the patient. This requires building relationships and partnerships with the common goal of better health, which requires a foundation of trust, empathy, and compassion. Every patient is treated as the individual that they are, and with the dignity that they deserve.
Dr. Chung endeavors not only to bring his extensive training and clinical experience to bear in every patient encounter, but to do so in a manner that inspires trust through empathy and compassion. Utilizing all the tools at his disposal–from the latest clinical and scientific studies to tried and true therapies–he has dedicated his career to improving the health and wellbeing of his patients.
Dr. Chung knows that balance is essential for maintaining a fulfilling life. His faith, family, and friends have helped him in pursuit of this end. He lives in Green Oaks with his wife, teenaged daughter and extremely food-driven dog. He participates in many outdoor activities, including skiing, hiking, and whitewater rafting. Dr. Chung also practices what he preaches with regard to health and particularly enjoys such fitness activities as running, biking, and weightlifting. His great passion is music, and he plays guitar in a band that “gigs” regularly around the Northern suburbs. A long-suffering Bears fan, he finds his optimism tested every season, but his loyalty is unwavering.
