Hypertension can be defined as “abnormally high blood pressure” and “a state of great psychological stress.” Fun, right? Notsomuch. Chronic stress is a frequent topic of mine in the blogosphere because of its undeniable effect on the human body – and in particular – the gut. We know that stress triggers our “fight or flight” response and that a vicious cycle of stress, anxiety, and GI symptoms can take a toll on our mood, our productivity, and our quality of life. It’s no secret that stress and anxiety (if left unmanaged) can beget more stress and anxiety, leading to increased IBS and IBD flareups, sleep disturbance, fatigue, and yes…both definitions of hypertension.
Scientists are constantly learning more and more about the gut microbiome and its role in our mental and physical health in hopes of finding new ways to treat conditions effecting the well-being of millions worldwide. Check out this article about a new study that shows our microbiome makeup can predict not only the presence of hypertension in humans, it can break it down into four distinct types of hypertension.
