Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal condition that affects millions of people across the world. One of the most researched and effective nutrition treatment plans is to follow the low FODMAP elimination diet. “FODMAP” is a funky and often intimidating acronym that stands for Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Monosaccharides And Polyols. Simply put, FODMAPs are certain natural sugars and fibers in foods that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine, resulting in a mix of gas, abdominal discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea.
The FODMAP diet is a short-term elimination diet that works as an experiment to help properly identify potential food triggers for IBS. Despite the benefits of following this diet, clients may find this eating pattern challenging because it limits the amounts of fruits, vegetables and many processed foods that may be part of their regular eating pattern. Fortunately, awareness of the benefits of the low FODMAP diet have increased over the recent years, which has resulted in more companies offering low FODMAP products. We have identified here several of these companies and their products that are currently on the market.
FODY: FODY foods is known for its wide range selection of low FODMAP products, including bars, seasonings, condiments, salad dressings and pasta sauces. Items can be purchased at retailers such as Whole Foods or Meijer, but the best selection will be online at www.fodyfoods.com.
