VITAMIN D AND COVID-19
VITAMIN D AND COVID-19
We diagnose vitamin D deficiency in nearly half of the patients we check a level. This is likely because vitamin D has shown to be quite important in numerous gut conditions – either as a contributing cause of symptoms or as a result of an underlying issue. Patients with celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and obesity have higher rates of vitamin D deficiency. So when studies began to show possible associations between vitamin D deficiency and possibly greater severity of COVID-19 infections, I paid attention.
At this time, it appears possible that being DEFICIENT in vitamin D may put an individual at a greater risk of severe COVID-19 infection, likely because of the role that vitamin D plays in the immune system. However, there is no evidence that vitamin D supplements can prevent or treat COVID-19. Much more is to be learned, but for an excellent summary of the latest information, check out this article from the New York Times:
