Attention Ladies: Lifting Weights Does NOT Make You Bulky and I have Proof!

By Liz Moon, NP

Check out this article from cnet.com and the reasons why woman should stop believing strength training makes them bulky:

cnet: Does lifting weights make women bulky? The myth that won’t die

Building muscle is a long, slow process that requires years of consistency, dedication and effort. Most people don’t put in enough time or effort to create the kinds of physiques they are scared of.

In general, women don’t produce as much testosterone as men. Testosterone production is a huge factor in your capacity for muscle growth which should tell you that you won’t turn into Wolverine overnight.

Many women don’t eat enough calories or enough protein to support significant muscle growth. Unless you’re eating more than your maintenance intake (i.e. 1800-2400 calories/day) don’t worry about getting bulky.

Your muscles need to be challenged. If you’re not progressively overloading your lifts on a regular basis, you’re not encouraging your muscles to grow.

I have been lifting weights for years now but over the past three years have focused on a sport called Powerlifting and love it! It helps me feel strong, has improved my body composition and mental health, and is reducing my risk of chronic disease. If you want to learn more about how exercise, especially lifting weights, can benefit your health contact us today! We have an entire team including a Board-Certified Obesity Medicine Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Registered Dietitians, Behavioral Counselor and Physical Therapist ready to help.
