BOOKSHELFIE – VOLUME #2
BOOKSHELFIE – VOLUME #2
by Jen Buettner, RN
Since the pandemic, I have listened to more audible books and podcasts to help me to keep moving outdoors or indoors while doing house chores. I love to keep moving especially on the days where I’m not able a full hour-long workout. Good books and podcasts help me maintain my goal of increasing my steps, my brain capacity, and add some fun, conversational content. Most recently, Emeran Mayer published a new book, The Gut-Immune Connection which was a perfect book to listen to while walking outdoors. I also listened to a podcast interview between Gwyneth Paltrow and Emeran Mayer which was entertaining as well. The podcast is a good way to get an overview of the book. Whether you’re a Gwyneth Paltrow fan or not, I love how she gets the conversation going and made me practice Emeran Mayer’s advice in my own daily lifestyle. Our CGH practice loves Emeran Mayer’s first book, the Mind- Gut Connection. Similar to his first book, the Gut-Immune connection includes cutting edge research to have a comprehensive look at the link between alterations to gut microbiome and development of chronic diseases. The highlights are advice to help build immunity and decrease chronic stress:
TO BUILD IMMUNITY: decrease processed food or high contents of simple sugar, avoid micronutrient deficiencies (ex. zinc, iron, vitamin A, Vitamin B6, C, E), minimize antibiotics, increase anti-inflammatory foods (ex. turmeric, polyphenols), increase gut health, more plant based (Mediterranean diet, traditional Japanese diet).
TO DECREASE STRESS: meditation, yoga, exercise, breathing techniques (ex. abdominal breathing), connect with nature, connect with family and friends, self-care, sleep, and in some cases, cognitive behavioral therapy.
On a lighter note, if anyone follows Leslie Jordan on Instagram, you will know he is a riot and his daily posts lightened my mood and spirits during the pandemic. He recently came out with a new book, How Y’all Doing? Which will be my next read or entertainment while on a walk?
