Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), a Multidisciplinary Approach
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), a Multidisciplinary Approach

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is epidemic in the U.S., affecting about 25-30% of adults. Lazarus and colleagues published this article in Nature last year “sounding the alarm on a silent epidemic.”
Nature Reviews: NAFLD — sounding the alarm on a silent epidemic
“It is largely unknown to the general population, policymakers and even the global public health community. Despite the already staggering number, the NAFLD burden is expected to grow in the coming decades,” predicting it may be the number one reason for liver transplant in the future.
In developing a conceptual framework for NAFLD, Lazarus and his team feel it depends less on individual choices and more on socioeconomic and environmental conditions. “We need to improve our understanding of how to provide patient-centered care to people with NAFLD, with multidisciplinary models of care tailored to their place on the disease spectrum.”
The good news is, we at Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Health have a multidisciplinary team of Gastroenterologists, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Dietitians, a Behavioral Counselor and Physical Therapist here to work toward aggressively assessing for and treating NAFLD.
