Do you feel complete when you poop?

By Allison Lindstrom, NP

Pelvic floor dysfunction is a topic of conversation that is becoming increasingly normalized in our society due to increased awareness by providers and available treatment options. Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is a common condition where one is unable to correctly relax and coordinate the muscles in their pelvic floor to urinate or to have a bowel movement. Pelvic floor dysfunction is a commonly diagnosed condition where patients may complain of constipation, incomplete evacuation, incontinence and/or frequent straining. Pain can also be present in the perineum with this condition.

So what causes PFD? While all the possible causes are still unknown, we often see patients report with complaints following a traumatic pelvic injury, pregnancy (regardless of vaginal tearing or size of baby), straining, pelvic surgery, obesity, and advanced age. This can be due to a single factor or multifactorial and may be a delayed response. Symptoms are not only limited to the gastrointestinal tract as patients with PFD may also report with urinary issues and sexual dysfunction and pain.

How can Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Health help you? The best place to start is with a provider who knows about the condition and can offer the best treatment options which may require endoscopic evaluation, medications, or referrals to to an amazing pelvic floor dysfunction physical therapy practice. If you are experiencing constipation, incomplete evacuation, fecal incontinence or frequent straining, don’t hesitate to reach out to our practice at 224-407-4400 to schedule a consultation or visit compgihealth.com for more information.
