Health Benefits of Spirulina
Health Benefits of Spirulina
by Claire Allen, RD
As we embark on a new year, many individuals are looking for ways to boost their health. Spirulina may just be a new superfood trend setter, with speculation that the spirulina market may reach $651 million by 2025. Spirulina is a blue-green algae that has been used a source of energy sustenance across cultures dating back to the Aztecs. Fast forward to the 21st century where it is now used as a dietary supplement by astronauts in outer space. So, what makes it so special? Nutritionally, it is a rich source of calcium, potassium, magnesium, B vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids and iron. Additionally, 1 TBSP contains 4 grams of protein. The phytonutrients (natural chemicals found in plants) of spirulina are thought to help fight inflammation and boost your immune system.
For those individuals following a strict plant-based or vegan diet, it can be a good source of omega-3 fatty acids and iron. Spirulina is available in capsules and powders and can easily be incorporated into baked items and smoothies. For optimal storage, keep the supplement in the refrigerator. Please keep in mind, any supplement may have potential side effects and is not regulated by the FDA. In particular, if you suffer from an autoimmune disease or blood clotting disorder, please check with your health provider before adding this product to your diet.
