CAN CANNABIS LOWER IBD SYMPTOMS?
CAN CANNABIS LOWER IBD SYMPTOMS?
By Elizabeth Campisi and Liz Moon, NP
Although it has been suggested that cannabinoids (compound found in cannabis) may possess anti-inflammatory properties, in the past cannabis has been inconsistent with respect to improving the symptoms of those with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the use of cannabis has continued to increase, with approximately 147 million individuals using it around the globe!
A recent article by Healio shows how many researchers, including Lillian Du, MD, are conducting studies to access the current effectiveness of cannabis in reducing IBD symptoms and test its association with disease factors:
This study, conducted by Dr. Du and her team, involved surveying patients at Mount Sinai Hospital with a confirmed IBD diagnosis for more than one month (the researchers took into consideration family and therapy history).
Key Findings of this Study:
- Almost ¾ of patients with Crohn’s Disease (CD) reported currently receiving a biologic
- More than half of patients with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) reported currently receiving a biologic
- More than half of all patients reported lifetime cannabis use
- Less than half of all patients reported current cannabis use
- These results indicate that the prevalence of active cannabis use has increased and that there may be a correlation “between cannabis use and a history of complimentary alternative medicine (such as those used to treat anxiety) use” in IBD.
- Further studies are needed, as this sample size of patients cannot capture “real-world heterogeneous IBD.”
