Time to Reorganize the Kitchen
Time to Reorganize the Kitchen
by Claire Allen, RD
Now more than ever we are eating, cooking, working and teaching in our kitchen space. How your kitchen environment is organized may impact your eating behaviors more than you realize. Here are eight great tips on how to reorganize your kitchen in order optimize making healthy food decisions:
- Remove tempting treats (i.e. baked goods, chip bags, cereal boxes) from your counter. Instead place inside a high cupboard or in the back of the pantry.
- Arrange healthy snacks front and center in your pantry and refrigerator.
- Rethink your portions. Use salad plates for entrees and 5 oz wine glasses rather than goblets for wine.
- Use an oil mister when cooking instead of drizzling straight from the bottle.
- Keep the salt off the table. Instead, have your spice rack clearly labeled, stocked and visible. Incorporate spices into your cooking for flavor rather than just added salt.
- Consider purchasing single serve portions for snacks such as ice cream in order to limit portions at one sitting.
- Refrain from eating family style. Instead, plate each meal at the stove or grill and bring your meal to the table. Visually removing the serving dishes of food will reduce the appeal to keep eating after you are satisfied.
- Leave yourself a sticky note on the fridge or cupboard that lists out your health goals. This will help you realize WHY you are eating and may shift your perspective if you are snacking out of boredom.
