Depression linked to Chronic Diarrhea and Constipation
By James E. “Jed” Foster, Jr., MA, LMFT
Check out this story about a new study released last month. For the first time, researchers have linked mood to altered bowel habits. Please read the full article and understand that these findings do not show a causal relationship. In other words, the results do NOT show that depression causes chronic diarrhea and constipation. What they show is that people diagnosed with depression have a much higher incidence of these GI symptoms than people who have not been diagnosed with depression. The results do not give us the ability to know whether these chronic conditions cause depression either. What the results do, is further back up the mounting evidence highlighting the significance of the mind-gut connection. Check it out!
