Mediterranean Diet = Longevity by Improving Gut Microbiome

By Liz Moon, NP

“Discovering that the Mediterranean diet could affect the microbiome in a positive way isn’t really surprising; the diet already has a stuffed shelf of scientific trophies. It’s won gold medals in reducing the risk for diabetes, high cholesterol, dementia, memory loss, depression and breast cancer.”

In a new study published at the beginning of 2020 in the BMJ (British Medical Journal), “eating the Mediterranean diet for just one year altered the microbiome of elderly people in ways that improved brain function and would aid in longevity.” This article from CNN describes the study findings:

CNN Health: Mediterranean diet scores another win for longevity by improving microbiome

Highlights from the article include, by eating a Mediterranean diet there was a slowing of the loss of gut bacteria. This loss is common with aging especially in the elderly that live in long-term residential care and those living alone. Increasing or maintaining a diverse gut microbiome plays an important role in how well nutrients are absorbed, immune response, energy levels and much more. All of which are critical to an aging individual. The study also found a decreased production of potentially harmful inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein and interleukin-17. There was an increase in beneficial bacteria linked to improved memory and brain function. The diet also appeared to slow signs of frailty, such as walking speed and hand grip strength. The 12-month study included individuals aged 65- to 79-year-olds from France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and the United Kingdom. The findings were similar and consistent no what matter nationality, where they lived, age or weight.
