Signs of IMPAIRED GUT HEALTH and Solutions

by Liz Moon, NP

We talk about cultivating a healthy gut microbiome all the time with our patients. Your gut microbiome is comprised of trillions of bacteria, virus, and fungi plus their DNA! Having diversity among these organisms has been shown to be beneficial to countless health related matters. This article outlines “Signs of Poor Gut Health…” and what to do about it.

Yahoo Life: The 6 Signs of Poor Gut Health and What to Do About It

To summarize these signs include:

  • Irregularities in digestion such as alterations in bowel movements, bloating, reflux
  • Skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne
  • Hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease
  • Mental health conditions, such as anxiety as depression
  • Obesity and fatty liver disease

What to do:

  • Consume a wide variety of different fruits and vegetables; having over 30 different fruits and vegetables per week has been shown to be a strong predictor of gut microbial diversity.
  • Include probiotic rich foods. Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi are good sources of probiotics (the living microorganisms that can affect gut health).
  • Start small. Increase the amount of these foods in your diet slowly. Adding too much too fast can results in bloating or other gastrointestinal distress. Pay attention to how you feel and adjust accordingly.
  • Stress reduction through exercise, meditation, journaling, reading, enjoying a warm bath; anything that allows you to be in the present moment can foster a healthy gut microbiome. Psychological stressors can impact the composition of the microbial ecosystem.
  • Sleep! I have written countless blogs on the importance of sleep hygiene and the impact on the gut microbiome.
