Natural Remedies for Constipation
Natural Remedies for Constipation
by Claire Allen, RD
Chronic constipation is a common gastrointestinal symptom that is estimated to affect 7-14% of the global population. Symptoms include reduced stool frequency, hard stool consistency, a sensation of incomplete evacuation and straining while going to the bathroom.
While there are many causes and treatment options for constipation, patients are often interested in natural remedies as a first line treatment. Kiwifruit, prunes, and psyllium husk are all natural options that have been shown to help alleviate symptoms. A recent study sought to compare the effectiveness of several foods in alleviating symptoms in patients throughout North America. The foods analyzed included 2 kiwi fruit, 100 grams of prunes (about 6 prunes) or 12 grams of psyllium husk (about 1 TBSP). In this study, 75 participants were randomized and asked to consume one of the treatment options daily for four weeks and document their gastrointestinal symptoms. Results of the study revealed the following benefits between weeks 3 and 4 of treatment:
- Stool frequency as measured by Complete Spontaneous Bowl Movement (CSBM) improved for all three groups.
- Stool consistency improved for those in the kiwi and prunes group.
- All three groups reported improvements in straining and a sense of complete evacuation.
